Trunk or Treat!
Help us reach out to the community and keep dentists in business!

Trunk-or-Treat is just around the corner, and we need your help! You can help make this year’s Trunk-or-Treat a success by 1) decorating your trunk, filling it with candy, and joining us in the church parking lot on Friday evening, October 31, or 2) donating candy. We would love to fill our parking lot with trunks loaded with candy, so please come join us! This is a wonderful opportunity to minister to the children and youth of our own congregation as well as to the many families from the surrounding neighborhoods. And it’s tons of fun! :)

If you are planning on bringing a trunk to trunk or treat, please sign the sign-up sheet located outside the Sanctuary. We will need to let Jeri know how many will be eating here prior to the trunk-or-treat festivities. If you have candy donations, you can leave those at church anytime between now and October 31. Thank you!

Many thanks to Ken and Liz Sawyer for having us at their home last Sunday for a Fall Fellowship. Everyone had plenty to eat and lots of fun! Thanks for the great time!

Our Kids Need Your Help!

KIDS’ CHURCH NEEDS YOU! We are in need of volunteers to help out on a rotational basis in Kids’ Church. Kids’ Church is a worship experience for children, ages 4-2nd graders, that takes place following the Children’s Moment each Sunday during Worship. Volunteers teach a lesson and lead games and crafts for the children. However, no preparation is necessary! All materials that are needed for each Sunday will be ready for you when you walk in the Kids’ Church door! If you are interested in being a Kids’ Church volunteer, please contact Darlene Smitherman or Dixie Ford. Thank you!

INTRODUCING: GODLY PLAY!

The Children’s Sunday School class began a new approach to learning this month. With the leadership of Jill Hudson, Pam Alford, and Kim Hyden, the Children’s Sunday School has begun a curriculum called Godly Play. More than a Sunday School curriculum, Godly Play is a way of exploring the mystery of God as revealed in the stories of the Bible and in our own lives. Through a weekly “feast,” Bible story, and creative response time, children are invited week after week to listen for God and to respond to God’s voice in their own way.

Because there is a lot to do and your children will not want to miss any of it, arriving by 9 is strongly encouraged. (However, “better late than never” still applies!)

Children’s Sunday School at Crosscreek continues to take our children on a journey to a deeper, more meaningful walk with Christ.

Interested in helping make Godly Play a success for our children? Please see Dixie Ford or Jill Hudson to find out how you can help!

This and That!

  • If you have not completed a survey from our Nominating Committee, there is still time to do so. The committee wants to know in what areas each of us are interested in serving.
  • Brandon has provided a link to our Wednesday night materials on the Crosscreek facebook page. Check it out, or better still, join us on Wednesday evenings.

Everyone is invited to a fun time of fellowship this Sunday afternoon, October 19, from 4:00 – 7:30 pm, at the home of Ken and Liz Sawyer. Please bring lawn chairs, hot dogs, buns, chips, desserts, drinks and sticks to roast the hot dogs over the open fire. The church will provide the condiments and the paper products. Also, bring your pumpkin!! There will be pumpkin painting, games and other entertainment for both children and adults!

Directions to the home of Liz & Ken Sawyer, 3476 Indian Lake Trail, Pelham, AL 35124
Please note that Google Map will correctly locate our house, but incorrectly shows the street name for the street that intersects Hwy 261 (Helena Rd) as Indian Lake Way. The correct street name is Indian Lake Trail which is the name on the street sign. Indian Lake Trail curves around our property and the activities will take place in the grassy areas beside and behind our house. Parking is available in our driveway, on the grass behind our house and along the street.

Having trouble finding us – call Ken’s cell 205-914-4658 or Liz’s cell 205-907-3691. Maps will be available on Sunday. I tried to put the map in our newsletter software, but it does not display.

These are some calendar events that you will want to note on your personal calendar:

Churchwide Fellowship at the Sawyer’s on October 19

Trunk or Treat, Friday, October 31, in our parking lot. We need donations of candy for those who will be decorating their trunks and welcoming the neighborhood children on Halloween night. There will be containers in the foyer for your gifts of candy.

Oklahoma Mission Trip will be November 6-9. The sign-up sheets are in the foyer.

Crosscreek Missions Auction, Sunday, November 16. Are you working on your gifts for the auction? The auction will be here before you know it.

On October 5, the Children’s Sunday School class began a new approach to learning, called Godly Play, under the leadership of Jill Hudson, Pam Alford, and Kim Hyden. Godly Play is more than a Sunday School curriculum; it is a way of exploring the mystery of God as revealed in the stories of the Bible and in our own lives. Through a weekly “feast,” Bible story, and creative response time, children are invited week after week to listen for God and to respond to God’s voice in their own way.

You can help! Godly Play involves many presentation sets and materials, some of which can be homemade and some of which must be purchased. The good news is, once the presentation sets and materials are in place, we are set! Godly Play materials do not change but are used year after year to tell the stories of the Bible. Of course, making and purchasing all the supplies needed will take time, skill, and money, but the investment into the spiritual lives of Crosscreek children is worth any and all effort on our part.

If you would like to help make Godly Play a success for the Children’s Sunday School classroom, here are several ways you can help:

1. Pray. Most importantly, you can pray for the success of Godly Play at Crosscreek. First and foremost, we desire to help our children experience the mystery of God and continue their journey with Christ.

2. Create. If you sew, draw, paint, work with wood, or enjoy crafty projects and would like to volunteer your time to help make Godly Play presentation sets, your help would be greatly appreciated! Of course, the more we can make ourselves, the less money we spend, which is always a good thing! Plus, we have the opportunity to add our own personal touch to materials that will enhance the faith of our children for years to come.

3. Shop. If you have a knack for shopping for the best deals, we could use your help purchasing supplies. Our goal is to provide quality materials for our children at minimal cost.

4. Donate. You can make a monetary donation, beyond your usual tithes and offerings, to the designated Children’s Ministry fund to be used to purchase Godly Play supplies. You can make a donation to be used as the Godly Play leaders see fit, or you can choose to purchase specific items, such as presentation sets or specific materials needed for the children’s response times.

If you would like to help in any way, please contact Jill Hudson or Dixie Ford (contact info below). Thank you for your help and especially for your prayers!

Grace and Peace,
Dixie

The Children’s Sunday School has changed and the kids who participated last week really liked the changes. Our schedule and our approach to our teaching will be quite different. Our classroom will now be considered a holy place to come together quietly and to worship through storytelling and through each student’s individual response. We will have our ‘feast time’ before Sunday School (until 9:10 am) in the Kid’s Church room next to our classroom. After everyone has finished the feast, each child will be escorted into the classroom by Ms. Kim or Ms. Pam. They will be seated on the floor around our storyteller (Ms. Jill) and wait quietly until everyone has been seated. When parents come for the children each child will be called from the circle to meet their parents.

We are beginning to use the Godly Play style of teaching our children since our age group ranges from 1st through 5th grade. Please be patient with us as we will be learning and changing our roles, too.

Mission Auction News

The Missions Auction will soon be here. In fact, it may be here sooner than ever before.

If you’ve never heard of the Missions Auction before, a little background. Each year, members and friends of Crosscreek donate homemade/handmade items (crafts, decorations, baked goods, etc.) and services (painting, yard work, etc.) that we then auction. The proceeds go to support the Missions Fund at Crosscreek as well as several of our missions partners.

Typically, the auction is held in early December and this year would fall on Sunday, December 7th. Because that time of the year has a very crowded calendar, the Missions Committee is considering moving the auction forward a few weeks to Sunday, November 16th.

We understand there isn’t a date that works for everyone, but we would like to hear your feedback. We would especially like to hear from folks who plan to make an item to be auctioned. Will you have time to get everything done by the earlier date? Let us know. You can email Brad at bradjeffcoat.

A Prayer Guide for Crosscreek Baptist Church Discipleship Committee
This prayer guide is designed to help the church join the newly formed Discipleship Committee in prayer as we seek ways to promote whole-life discipleship and stewardship of time, talents, and resources. We understand that when Jesus calls us to follow our lives begin to be transformed. The process of transformation takes many different paths, but the Discipleship Committee is committed to helping to highlight ways for everyone at Crosscreek to grow more deeply connected to Christ.

Each day this week, please follow this guide as we pray for our own spiritual formation and for the work of the Discipleship Committee.
Sunday
Pray that the committee would work with clarity and joy as they seek to promote the ways in which discipleship is already occurring at Crosscreek.
Monday
Pray for divine inspiration as the committee explores new ways to promote discipleship at Crosscreek.
Tuesday
Pray for those who are in leadership roles at Crosscreek – staff, Sunday School teachers, Wednesday night leaders, and volunteers – that they would be encouraged in the work they are doing.
Wednesday
Pray for your own engagement with discipleship. Pray that God would reveal clearly any new ways you are being asked to engage in following the way of Christ. How are you being called to grow more deeply into your faith?
Thursday
Pray for the next generation of leaders at Crosscreek. Pray that God would continue to raise up those who are being called to use their talents to participate more deeply and help lead us as we congregation ally follow God’s call.
Friday
Pray for the financial stewardship of Crosscreek. Pray that the Discipleship Committee would see clearly ways that God is asking them to help create a community of generosity. Pray that all of us would develop open hands, to live generously so that the love of God may be known by
all.
Saturday
Pray for peace and unity for Crosscreek. The more deeply we grow into God, the more at peace we become. The more deeply we grow into God, the more we realize how many things bind us all together. Pray that Crosscreek would be the type of community that is patterned by peace.

CROSSCREEK CHRISTMAS CHOIR NEEDS YOU!

You are invited to join the Christmas Choir as we begin preparing for this year’s Christmas cantata. We will rehearse on Sunday afternoons, beginning September 7, from 4-5 in the Choir Room. This is a wonderful opportunity to minister to our congregation through the gift of music–and not only to our congregation but to each other, as well. Christmas Choir is hard work but it is also a time of fellowship and fun!

On Sunday, September 7, we will have a Cantata Preview Party in the choir room. Come and enjoy listening to the music we will be working on. We might even preview a few Christmas snacks!
